My first big paddle was from Byron Bay to the Great Barrier Reef in 1999, and the public interest that it generated made me aware of the potential of marathon paddling expedition.
Then I went to Sydney, got a haircut, bought a suit, and put my paddle away for 7 years. Fortunately, I managed to integrate my passion for the environment into my career. As a result, I have participated in several incredible projects which have done good, economically, socially and environmentally - a triple positive .
I also had the opportunity to travel to Tasmania three times. I’m not against forestry. As a construction material, timber is far more environmentally friendly than its alternatives. I’ve seen forests which have been profitably and sustainably harvested for decades and are perfectly healthy. I’ve also witnessed the devastation and wastage caused by inappropriate forestry practices.
And perhaps this explains why I feel so strongly about the proposed Gunns Pulp Mill. To me, it just doesn’t add up, environmentally, socially or economically. Instead of being a triple positive, it looks like a a triple negative - for Gunns, and for the people of Tasmania
And that’s something we can’t afford. Its obvious that we are using up resources faster than they can be replenished. Our climate is changing, our rivers are running dry, our land is degrading through salinity and erosion. Things have to change. The secret to that change is doing it in a way which allows us to maintain our quality of life.
While paddling from Sydney to Hobart is a scary, inspiring challenge, the true challenge, and the true adventure, is to learn to live in harmony with our environment. It will take careful judgement, courage, and commitment. Those abilities, that journey and that adventure, lie within us all.

僕の最初の大きなカヤッキングトリップは、1999年バイロンからバリアリーフまでのパドリング。そこで得た大衆の興味が、この旅の可能性を気付かせてくれたきっかけ。
そしてシドニーへ行き、髪を切り、スーツを買い、7年ぶりのパドルを手にした。僕は運良く、自分の自然への情熱をキャリアに結びつけることが出来た。そしていくつかの素晴らしい分野―経済的にも社会的にも、そして環境面でも〈Triple Positive〉―で働いてきた。
3度ほどタスマニアに行っている。林業に反対な訳ではない。他の木の使用方法に比べて、建築物の資料、木材としての利用の方がはるかに環境に優しい。持続的で、その上利益が出るような完璧にヘルシーな森の利用を見てきた。そして荒廃と消耗の裏には、適切でない森の実用があることも。
だからこそ、このGunnsのパルプ工場設立について強い反対があるのだろう。僕にとってこれは、経済的に、社会的に、そして環境的にただ全く筋が通らない。それはタスマニアの人々にとって、Gunnsにとってですら〈Triple Negative〉でしかない。
そしてもうそんな余裕はどこにも無いのだ。僕達が資源を、再度それが満たされるより早いスピードで使っているのはもう明らかで、気候は変わり、川の水は干上がり、土地は塩分と侵食で削り取られている。変わらなければいけない。現実的に。生活の質を維持できる方法で。
シドニーからホバートまでのパドルは恐ろしい。奮い立つような真のチャレンジで、冒険で、自然と調和して生きていくことを学ぶことものだ。僕は慎重な判断、勇気、そして約束と共に行く。だから、その可能性、この旅と冒険は僕達みんなの中に。
