Well you would have thought that I learnt from yesterday, and once again it was a still morning with a Southerly forecast later in the day. Until now Emi has been meeting me with the car every evening, so I’ve just been carrying lunch. This time, with a long stretch of Wilderness coast to cross, I had to be self-sufficient, and by the time I had organised all my food and camping gear, packed it into dry-bags and got it done to the kayak it was midday again! So there I went, off into a blasting Southerly again. At Green Cape a serenade of seals, flippers waving in the air, welcomed me to the next leg of the journey. Then it was past the lighthouse, wind howling in my ears, struggling for every meter. I had intended reaching Nadgee Point, about 30k past Bitangabee, but in that wind got about 20k before pulling in for a rest at Nelson Beach (I think) where I found the most incredible camp site, right on the beach. Then I found an even better site just inland, and when I started exploring, one of the most superb camp-sites I’ve ever seen about 1k further in. With native grasses kept manicured by a herd of ‘roos and not a weed in site, it looked like the lawn of a Vaucluse Mansion. I even found a bit of spongy moss to lie down in, softer than the softest mattress, and perfect for easing the aches I was feeling after 2 days paddling into a gale I lay on a log fallen (all by itself) over a dry creek, looking up at the blue sky and the racing clouds, and remembered what its all about. Living, and leaving the world just a bit better than we found it I was in bed before dark.
