The Tasmanian Round Table for Sustainable Industries

Tasmania is an incredible place, abounding in natural resources.  One option for economic development is to strip these resources in a high volume, low-margin, mechanised process such as pulp-milling.  The alternative is to realise the true value of these resources, and build a high value, high margin diversified "new" economy based on the sustainable, optimal use of these resources.

Indeed, the figures ctell the story. Over the past decade, while jobs and wealth in the industrial sector have fallen, Tasmania's economy has experienced a period of unprecedented growth through the "new" economy.

In this context, the Round Table was established by the Launceston Environment Centre to bring together representatives from all sectors of Tasmania’s economy:

Its task:

  1. To establish if current large scale business proposals, such as the pulp mill, will yield real economic benefits for the State and utilize Tasmania’s resource in a sustainable way.
  2. Commission a report by an independent third party to investigate the above and to provide recommendations for sustainable industry in Tasmania.
  3. To produce a position statement from the Roundtable participants outlining the framework, policy requirements and investments required for sustainable industry in Tasmania.
