The Tamar Valley is located on Tasmania’s North Coast, famous for its tourism, glorious forests, productive farmland, and high quality food and wine. The Tamar is also the proposed site of a pulp mill proposed by Gunns, Tasmania’s largest company.
On the positive side, Gunns forecast that the mill is going to make $6.7 billion and create 1617 jobs.
On the negative side, the pulp mill will:
- Consume 5 million Tonnes of Tasmanian forest a year
- Pollute the Tamar valley, contributing to deaths from lung disease
- Pump 30 billion liters of dioxin laden effluent into the Bass
- Strait, poisoning seafood and killing marine life in the Strait and up the Coast of Victoria
- Increase deaths from logging truck accidents
I'm not a big fan of criticism, but I am a big fan of finding the facts, and exploring all the alternatives. Which leads to two big questions:
- 1. What is the cost of the mill to the rest of Tasmania’s Industries?
- Fisherman, farmers, abalone divers, food and wine producers depend on the clean air and water of the Tamar Valley. Will they lose their livelihoods as the air and water is polluted? Will Gunns profit at the other's expense?
- 2. Is there a better way?
- There aren’t many places which have the natural beauty and resources of the Tamar Valley. Is there a sustainable way for the Tamar to generate equivalent wealth, without the environmental destruction?
The Tasmanian Round Table for Sustainable Industries has been established to answer these questions, and develop a blueprint for a sustainable future for the Tamar Valley.

タルマ渓谷はタスマニアの北海岸に位置し、自然美と観光、神々しい森、生産性のある土地、そして美味しいワインや食べ物などで有名な場所だ。しかし一方でここは、タスマニア最大企業であるGunnsによるパルプ工場設立が提案されている土地でもある。
これを建てることによりこの工場は約70億円の利益と、1617種の仕事を生み出すと言う。だが実際には、年間5億トンの森が消費され、タルマ渓谷を汚染し、肺病を引き起こす。その上30億トンのダイオキシンが海に流れ出し、そのまま水産物を汚染、海の生命を破壊、それは海岸を沿ってビクトリアまで広がる。そして何百台もの伐採トラックが引き起こす事故が懸念されている。非難することに意味はない。真実を追究して、それに変わるポジティブな代用策を探求するのだ。
本当にそれでいいのか？僕には疑問がある。
1，パルプ工場は他の産業にどう影響するか。漁師、農夫、あわび業者、観光業、タルマ渓谷のクリアな水と空気に依存する全ての産業が、引き起こされる汚染によってその生きるすべを失う。Gunnsの利益はその全てを代償するもの？
2， 他に良い方法が？タマル渓谷は他に類を見ない自然環境と資源の宝庫である。環境を破壊せず、さらにパルプ工場に匹敵する富を生み出す道はないのか？
タスマニアのラウンドテーブルがその答えになる道を、タマル渓谷における続く未来の鍵の設立を行っている。
